10/06/2009

Gibraltar ship register has improved its ranking on the White List of the Paris MoU, a key international framework for assessing the quality of ships.

Gibraltar was ranked 23rd among the worlds top ship registers, up from the 26th slot last year.

The Gibraltar register outperformed many other leading maritime nations including European countries sauch as Malta, Portugal and Spain.

A total of 83 countries are listed by the Paris MoU in a ranking divided into white, grey and black sections.

The ranking is calculated over a three year period by assessing the number of ship detentions for each register.

Ships trading within the Paris MoU region - which includes Europe and Canada - are regulated inspected by government maritime officials as a means of ensuring high standards and weeding out ´rust buckets´.

A good ranking on the White List is seen as a vital element for the success of a quality flag.

The Gibraltar Maritime Administration, which runs the local ship register, prides itself on attracting well-run vessels operated by reputable owners.
